Modeling Volume Changes in Porous Electrodes

چکیده
A three-dimensional mathematical model is presented to describe volume changes in porous electrodes occurring during operation. Material conservation equations are used to derive governing relationships between electrode dimensions and porosity for deposition/precipitation, intercalation, and ionomer-based electrodes. By introducing a parameter, called the swelling coefficient, the relative magnitudes of the change in electrode dimensions and the change in porosity are determined. The swelling coefficient is design-dependent and measured experimentally for a given cell design. The model is general and forms a critical addition required to extend the existing porous electrode models to include volume change effects. For the special case of uniform reaction distribution, analytical solutions are presented and used to illustrate the effect of volume changes in porous electrodes. © 2005 The Electrochemical Society. Material Balance Modification in One-Dimensional Modeling of Porous Electrodes
The material balance used previously in one-dimensional mathematical models of porous electrodes is invalid when there is a nonzero volume change associated with the reaction. It is shown here how the material balance should be modified either to account for a loss in volume, or to account for an inflow of electrolyte from the header into the active pores. A one-dimensional mathematical model i...

This paper presents a two-dimensional computational model of micro-structured cathodic electrodes featuring nano-porous gas diffusion media that increase the surface to volume ratio of the deposited catalyst layer. A key objective of the modeling effort is to elucidate the Knudsen diffusion within the nano-porous electrode. In addition, the model is non-isothermal and resolves the natural conve...

In the present work, the mathematical model of a homogeneous, isotropic thermoelastic double porous micro-beam, based on the Euler-Bernoulli theory is developed in the context of Lord-Shulman [1] theory of thermoelasticity. Laplace transform technique has been used to obtain the expressions for lateral deflection, axial stress, axial displacement, volume fraction field and temperature distribut...
متن کاملSimulation of deformation behavior of porous Titanium using Modified Gurson yield function
In this research the stress-strain curve of porous Titanium, as a common material for biomedical application, was predicted using the mechanical properties of fully solid Titanium experimental data. Modified Gurson model (Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model) was used to predict the plastic response of porous Titanium in compaction. Different values of GTN parameters were used for different i...
متن کاملA one-dimensional model for water desalination by flow-through electrode capacitive deionization
Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a fast-emerging water desalination technology in which a small cell voltage of ~1 V across porous carbon electrodes removes salt from feedwaters via electrosorption. In flow-through electrode (FTE) CDI cell architecture, feedwater is pumped through macropores or laser perforated channels in porous electrodes, enabling highly compact cells with parallel flow and ...
